Kutztown to Fort Lauderdale

Here's another small world event that happened while in college.

My sister and her friends were driving to Fort Lauderdale during college break and asked me if I wanted to join them because they needed help with gas money. I was allowed to bring my friend, Mary Zlobinski, along too -- if she also helped to chip in for expenses.

So we drive all of the way from Kutztown Pennsylvania to Fort Lauderdale Florida -- it's over well over 1200 miles and 20 hours of driving.

We get settled in at the motel and enjoyed the pool and relaxing in the sunshine. In the evening Mary and I headed over to a nightclub that looked like it would be fun in the advertisements. As we entered the establishment, the bouncer was someone I knew from college. Apparently, his grandparents lived in Fort Lauderdale and he visited with them regularly and held a part-time job at the nightclub when he was in town.

How bizarre is that I travelled all of this distance and picked this exact club where someone I knew from Kutztown would happen to be working?

Judy Ann Naher born November 27th, 1954

I was born in Miseracordia Hospital in West Philadelphia. On the very same day, the Nahers were giving birth to Judy Ann and Mrs. Naher shared the hospital room with my mother. My mom and Judy's mom became friends and our families saw each other several times after our big entrance into this world.

The move to Audubon once again changed our lives because it was so far away from Philadelphia and it was too much trouble for family and friends to visit and vice versa. I know. I know. You're probably thinking that it's not that far. Yep. It's only a half an hour or so, but in those days I guess people stayed close to home and enjoyed seeing their family and friends close by.

So, as years went on, Christmas cards were passed back and forth for awhile, but the friendship dwindled and we lost touch with the Nahers.

It's not until after attending Bishop Kenrick High School and starting college at Kutztown State that I would cross paths with Judy Ann and prove once again that it is a small world.

The story starts when my best friend during high school, Mary Zlobinski, decided to go to West Chester State College. We talked every day, told stories about our experiences at college and after a few weeks, I decided to take the trip from Kutztown to West Chester to visit with Mary at her dormitory to see what West Chester was all about.

Mary was so excited to see me. It was a Friday night and all of the girls were getting ready to go out. Mary took me from room to room introducing me to her floormates.

We came to one room and Mary introduced me to a pretty blonde haired girl named Judy Ann. Now, I'm thinking -- how many Judy Anns are in this world? And, the same age as me? I said, "Were you born on November 27th?" and she said she was and asked how in the world did I know that? Then I said, "Is your last name Naher?" and she said it was. How could I possibly know this information? How could I possibly know who she was?

Mary and Judy Ann thought I was some mindreader but, no -- it was just another small world event happening in my life.

The Kelly Twins

Ok -- so my mom's mom was a Kelly and the Kellys lived in Jenkintown, PA. We would go to visit and I would play with my cousins who were twin boys, Pat and Mike Kelly. When we moved to Audubon from Philadelphia in 1960, we didn't get to see the relatives much because of the distance. In fact, our visits dwindled down to nothing in a couple years.

In the summer of 1968, I was staying at Long Beach Island, NJ with my girlfriend Diane Ruppe and her family and we went to the beach for hours and hours and hours each day.

One day while we were surfing using our large air rafts, Diane and I started to talk with two boys who were our age and were twins. We were having alot of fun with them riding the waves when they announced that they had to leave to go home to eat lunch.

Before they ran off, we asked them what their names were and one of them said, Pat. So, I said "I guess your brother's name is Mike and your last name is Kelly." Pat said -- "HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT?"

I thought he was kidding. I hadn't seen my cousins for about 6 years, so I was thinking that these two guys could be my cousins!!! They each pulled out their picture id cards to prove that their names actually were Pat and Mike Kelly but we discovered that they were not my cousins. They just happened to be two boys who were twins and shared the same names as my cousins.

How weird was this?

The Start of Small World Events

Hey - I've been wanting to write down all of the small world events that have taken place in my life for several years now. What do I mean by small world events? Well, since I was a young girl I've had events happen in my life that would result in someone saying "It's a small world, isn't it?" and I'm going to start to document my ever-so interesting, often occurring small world events, reach out to others who have similar events and see if there's more to it than just coincidence.

So, think about it -- do you find yourself thinking of someone or something and that person or item appears in front of you or someone mentions the person or item?

Do things from your past cross your path again? Do people come back into your life again?

Let's have fun with this blog - I hope that you enjoy my entries and I'd love for you to share your memories and experiences with me as well!
